Scholarships
IUPUI School of Journalism Undergraduate Scholarships
Scholarships are available to qualified undergraduate Journalism majors. These scholarships are intended for full-time students with strong academic records and interest in professional news or public relations work. All scholarships are meant to provide recognition of student excellence in academic and journalistic pursuits.
There are several scholarships available to IUPUI students:
- Society of Professional Journalists Bettie Cadou Memorial Scholarship
- M. William Lutholtz Memorial Scholarship
- Patrick J. McKeand "Keep You Nose to the Grindstone" Scholarship Award
- James W. Brown Scholarship

The Associated Press Sports Editors are sponsoring four $1,500 scholarship
for collegiate sports journalists.
APSE, a national organization of sports editors, is awarding four
scholarships to help motivate talented students to pursue a career in
sports journalism. Collegiate sports journalists entering their sophomore,
junior or senior years are eligible for the scholarship which will awarded
based on the students' journalistic work, their academic record, financial
need, and geography. The scholarships will be awarded to students from four
different regions of the United States. The winners will be chosen by the
APSE scholarship committee, which is chaired by Joe Sullivan, sports editor
of the Boston Globe and includes editors from all sections of the United
States.
Please have them include the following information in their letter of
application:
- Personal: Name, address, age, phone number.
- Academic: A copy of the student's collegiate grades.
- Financial: A brief rundown of the student's financial situation, with
regards to how he/she plans to pay for tuition and copies of any pertinent
records including the copies of the FAFSA form EFC and family’s income tax
return.
- Letters of recommendation: One or more from teachers/employers.
- Five examples of sports journalism (usually stories but could also be
sections the student has edited).
- Finalists may be contacted for an interview .

Edmund S. Muskie Graduate Fellowship Program
The Edmund S. Muskie Graduate Fellowship Program (Muskie) is a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State, and implemented by IREX. Muskie provides opportunities for Master’s level study in the United States to citizens from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. Participants are selected through an open, merit-based competition. IREX welcomes applications from all institutions of higher education able to provide an intensive, dynamic, and high-quality graduate education in at least one of the eleven fields of study.
Fellows will:
• Enroll in fulltime academic coursework for up to two years.
• Participate in a volunteer project related to their professional interests.
• Take part in internships following academic coursework.
The Muskie Fellowship provides fellows with:
• J-1 Visa Support
• Round-trip airfare from fellow’s home city to host institution in the United States
• Accident and sickness medical insurance
• Monthly allowance for living expenses
• Partial tuition and mandatory university fees
• Limited allowance for books
• Limited allowance for professional enrichment activities
• Pre-academic English-language training (if necessary)
• A wide variety of alumni networking and training opportunities

Cox Scholarship
Every year, the Cox Scholarship rewards the efforts of 21 outstanding students who have demonstrated academic success while working to fund their education. Open to students at IU Bloomington and IUPUI, the next application deadline is March 1, 2008.
Visit the Cox Scholars Website for more information about this generous scholarship, which pays 75 percent of the total cost of tuition and is renewable for three years.
Indianapolis Press Club Scholarships
The Indianapolis Press Club offers several scholarships worth approximately $1,000 each year to students studying journalism. There are no published deadlines on their web site. Write info@indypressfoundation.org.
AYJW Literary Contest and Scholarship
The Association of Young Journalists and Writers is sponsoring a $2000 Literary Essay Contest. Could you please recommend to your students to submit any essays that they have written to http://ayjw.org so that they could participate in the contest. The deadline is June 30th and more information about the essay contest is available at http://ayjw.org/rewards.php?type=lit.
Furthermore, our Journalism Studies Scholarship has been extended to English and closely related majors as well. Students may apply for the scholarship at http://ayjw.org/scholarships.php.
Christian Life Missions Scholarship
Christian Life Missions will be awarding five $1,000 Robert Walker Scholarships in June 2006 for the 2006-07 school year. The scholarships will be awarded to five qualified journalism students who have at least a 3.5 grade average.

2. Current resume (5 copies)
3. Certified transcript of academic work (plus 4 copies)
4. 5 copies each of five published works

Woman's Press Club Scholarships
The Woman's Press Club of Indiana is offering two scholarships for journalism students.
A $500 scholarship honoring Hortense Myers, former UPI statehouse reporter, will be awarded to a junior-level Indiana college student who is planning a career in journalism. Hortense Myers is remembered by her colleagues on the beat and in the journalism classroom as a fair but relentless reporter who sought the truth in every story she pursued.
One $500 award will be made to a woman over 30 years of age who desires to upgrade her skills to re-enter the journalism job market or to seek a better-paying job. This award is in memory of Louise Eleanor Ross Kleinhenz, a 45-year-member of Woman's Press Club of Indiana. Kleinhenz served the organization as president, historian and Bulletin editor before her death in 1977.

2006-07 Lynn Dean Ford/Indianapolis Association of Black Journalists Scholarship
The members of the Indianapolis Association of Black Journalists (IABJ) believe African-American communications professionals should work together in an effort to increase black employment in the media, secure more management positions, sensitize all media to overt and institutional racism, and encourage and educate young African-Americans interested in communication careers.
IABJ offers a $1,000 scholarship annually to an African-American student who meets at least one of the following criteria:
Graduate of an Indiana high school that must be able to provide proof of enrollment in communications/journalism school in the state of Indiana or elsewhere for the fall of 2005.
Current college student enrolled for the fall of 2006 that is majoring in communications or journalism at a four-year accredited college or university in Indiana.
Application materials must be postmarked by the deadline date. Application materials include: 1) a completed application, 2) two letters of recommendation, 3) samples of your work in the media (articles or tapes) and 4) a 250 to 500-word typed, double-spaced essay on what attracted you to communications/journalism and your goals within the field.
